Textiles have fascinated me since childhood, especially touching them. I have also been interested in painting since I was a child.
Weaving tapestries combines both passions perfectly. During my time at universitiy I studied intensively the teachings of „Bauhaus“, Paul Klee, Johannes Itten, Anni and Joseph Albers.
For many years I exclusively painted. In the early 1990s I started weaving.
Two exhibitions convinced me to start tapestry weaving. One showed tapestries based on paintings by Chagall, the other showed carpets woven in Anatolia.
To learn tapestry weaving I visited „la Manufacture des Gobelins“ in Paris and Beauvais, the manufactures in Aubusson and Felletin, took courses in West Dean College England and Aubusson in France and with several weavers of tapestries.
Compared to paintings, tapestries have an additional dimension, that completely captivated me: the texture of the fabric and the warmth of the material.
To transform the dynamic of sketches and paintings into the quietness of a woven tapestry is one of the motivating aspects of my weaving.
I travel a lot, stay at the northern seaside during long periods. From these trips I bring new impressions which I transform into drawings, paintings and tapestries.
To combine great contrasts are basic motivations of my works.
